Astra Armstrong

Duke Ellington School of the Arts

12th Grade

Native of Southeast, Washington DC, 18 year old Astra Armstrong credits Ellington for turning her life around and helping her believe that regardless of your difficulties and misfortune, you can still go somewhere in life if given the chance and if you believe in yourself. With the help of her Ellington instructors she has come a long way, from losing her mother her freshman year and ending her first year at Ellington with a 1.2 GPA, to getting straight As, maintaining a 3.5 GPA, and securing eleven college acceptances. Astra continues to prove that a little perseverance and tenacity goes a long way.

In March 2013, Astra had the chance to perform her own work alongside the late Maya Angelou, who was reciting her poem Still I Rise. After the performance, Ms. Angelou turned to her and said these three words: " pride, determination, resilience ". Today, Astra embodies all these and more as a writer, a performer, a dancer and a dreamer. She looks forward to a bright future and hopes to become a motivational speaker so she can encourage other young people with similar circumstances to aspire and achieve more than what surrounds them overcoming drugs, abuse, homelessness, neglect, poverty, and much more.

Astra, has been accepted to Norfolk State University and plans to enroll in the Fall as a first time Freshman, pursuing a bachelors degree in Business Administration. She plans to use her platform at the university to empower others and make her impact on the world.
